Frito Lay – Health food?
The FDA allows chip maker, Frito Lay, to say that their chips are somehow health food and and improve your lipid profile.
From Frito Lay’s website, “Our all-natural sunflower, corn and soybean oils ….which help lower total and LDL “bad” cholesterol and maintain HDL “good” cholesterol levels, which can support a healthy heart.”
At the same time, the FDA threatens seizure of walnuts from Diamond Food for saying that eating walnuts gives you Omega-3s which “do your body a big favor.”
Please click on this link to read that hand slap that Diamond Foods got from our friends at the FDA, it is public record on fda.gov.
Here are a few tidbits from the FDA letter to the walnut people, “Based on claims made on your firm’s website, we have determined that your walnut products are promoted for conditions that cause them to be drugs because these products are intended for use in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of disease. The following are examples of the claims made on your firm’s website under the heading of a web page stating “OMEGA-3s … Every time you munch a few walnuts, you’re doing your body a big favor.”
Never mind that walnuts DO contain omega-3 fatty acids which have been proven in numerous studies to provide multiple health benefits.
Oh, and going back to Frito Lay’s claim that their chips, made from rancid, heated, chemically-extracted inflammatory oils like sunflower, corn and soybean oils, can lower LDL, raise HDL and support a healthy heart…ARRRRGH! These (Frito Lay) omega-6 oils create brittle and unhealthy cell membranes which leads to inflammation, the underlying cause of all chronic diseases including heart disease!
How does BIG Food get away with this?
There is a revolving door for the brass at the FDA, Big Food, Big Pharma and Big Ag (Monsanto). Folks move from chair to chair, legislating here, collecting money there.
One example involves Michael Taylor. Mr. Taylor, a former Monsanto executive, has joined the FDA as senior advisor to the commissioner. One of his jobs is to implement new food safety legislation
The wolf is guarding the henhouse.
Monsanto is king of GMO (genetically modified organisms for food). GMO takes the genes from one species and inserts them into another species. This is different than hybridizing seeds or breeding animals.
“In traditional breeding it is possible to mate a pig with another pig to get a new variety, but is not possible to mate a pig with a potato or a mouse.” – Responsible Technology.org
Some plants have been modified to produce their own pesticides or to resist Monsanto’s herbicide, Round-up. These Round-up Ready GMO seeds are quite common.
What repercussion will these altered plants have on humans?
We don’t know because people like Michael Taylor at the FDA (formerly with Monsanto) are allowing GMO food regulation to slide by with nary a glance, while they are busy slapping the hand of the walnut packagers for printing on their package that walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids.
This is a mad world.
To completely avoid GMO foods, eating organic is a safe bet. You can avoid eating GMO foods (most corn, soy, wheat, sugar beets) by eliminating processed food from your diet. Corn and soy are in everything and if the ingredient label does not say that they are using organic corn and soy, then you can bet that they are using GMO corn and soy.
You are the hamster in the GMO experiment, because nobody knows what will happen to people down the road when we eat GMO foods.
Maybe next time I’ll tell you how Donald Rumsfeld, former CEO and President of GD Searle managed to get his buddy, FDA commissioner, Arthur Hayes Hull to approve Aspartame (NutraSweet) as the company was sold to Monsanto. This approval magically happened after Aspartame had been banned by the FDA because it was suspect in causing brain tumors.
My advice: Eat real food. The way God made it. Stay away from most things that the FDA approves and don’t eat anything that comes out of a chemistry food lab or biotechnology lab.
