Trying to Lose Weight? Why I Recommend Avoiding Most Dried Fruit

When folks begin to eat a real food diet and stop eating grains, processed foods and sugar, there is a pull toward over consuming fruit and nuts. Dried fruit can be a real problem with creating unstable blood sugar levels, leading to weight gain and sugar cravings.

Medjool Dates

  • ONE Date is 18 grams of carbs – turns into 4.5 tsp sugar in your bloodstream.
  • Dates are great for athletes who need to fuel on the run.
  • One cup of chopped dates is 134 grams of carbs – turns into 33.5 tsp of sugar, approaching 3/4 cup sugar.

Raisins

  •  Raisins: 1/2 cup is 65 grams of carb and turns into 16 tsp sugar

Dried fruit is concentrated sugar.

Dried Fruit is often contaminated with mold

Dried fruits are susceptible to mold growth and mycotoxin formation because of their high sugar content, method of harvest and drying conditions (Trucksess and Scott, 2008).
