Layering Essential Oils
Many essential oils are safe to apply directly to the skin. For example, Lavender is a versatile oil that can be used on children without dilution. It is important to note that many (most) essential oil brands on the market are not providing pure lavender essential oil, but use lavandin, this is not the same thing.
Use Young Living essential oils to be sure that you have the real deal, 100% pure, 100% authentic and therapeutic and safe as well as effective.
Layering essential oils is a technique of applying multiple oils one at a time.
For example, if you have sore muscles try rubbing Marjoram over the area. After the area is dry then apply Peppermint and allow it to absorb into the skin. A third oil can then be applied, such as Basil.
Layering brings different benefits than a blend would, where the oils are mixed together and applied to the site at the same time.
Consulting reference materials you might see several oils listed as options, try layering a few of the suggested oils.
When we layer essential oils, we apply one oil at a time, waiting 1-2 minutes between application of each oil. Some oils will absorb within 15-30 seconds, and any oil will absorb within 2 minutes. The order of the oils and the ratio of drops of each is totally inconsequential. That is why I say that even children can safely apply the oils themselves with supervision.

If you hurt your ankle you might use oils that support tissue healing, reduce the appearance of bruising, and support muscles.
- Apply 2 drops of Cypress. This oil is great for circulation. Allow Cypress to dry.
- Apply 2 drops of Helichrysum to support the bruised area and let it dry.
- Apply 2 drops of Peppermint and rub it in until it is absorbed. This will help soothe the soreness.
Enhancing Topical Application
The longer the essential oil stays in contact with the skin, the better the absorption.
After applying oils layer ART lotions, Sandalwood Moisture Cream, or Boswellia Wrinkle Cream on top to reduce evaporation of the essential oils.
There are other application methods to explore as well:
- Warm compress
- Cold packs
- Bath: Mix 4-10 drops of essential oils in 1/4 cup of Epsom salts or bath gel base and then add the mixture to the running water from the faucet and allow to disperse in the tub.
