Can You Have a Carmex Addiction?

Can you be addicted to Carmex?

Just ask yourself, will you throw it away and do without?

I posed that question to a client recently while digging for clues to her  chronic itching lips. “It’s made from petroleum products, it isn’t helping the situation,” I said.

Happily I talked her into throwing out the Carmex in her purse. Later I got a picture and a confession,

“Carmex was everywhere in my life.  I used Carmex all the time.  If I went somewhere and forgot it, I would panic and sometimes stop to buy another one.

I’ve been consulting with Erin in regards to an itching problem that I am having, and one of the places is my lips.

She asked me what type of lip balm/lipstick I use. I told her it was Carmex and her eyes widened and she told me to stop using it, and throw it out. I went home and searched out my stashes of jars, tubes and roll ups.  I found out how bad the addiction really was. (This is my picture).”

I sent my client directly to the health food store to buy a product without toxic ingredients.

What is in Carmex?

Camphor

Petrolatum, Paraffin (byproduct of petroleum refining)

Fragrance (synthetic chemical soup, contains dozens of chemicals)

Vanillin (synthetic, byproduct of the paper industry)

Flavor

lanolin, cetyl esters, theobroma cacao seed butter, beeswax, menthol, salicylic acid, Phenol

Is BLISTEX any better?

Blistex Ingredients:

Beeswax, camphor, cetyl alcohol, cetyl palmitate, euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, flavors, isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate, isopropyl stearate, lanolin, lanolin oil, menthol, methylparaben, mineral oil, ozokerite, paraffin, petrolatum, polybutene, propylparaben, red 6 lake, cocoa seed butter, titanium dioxide, Octinoxate, Octisalate, Dimethicone

Plug “Blistex” into EWG.org and read more about these ingredients.

Your skin is your largest organ.

What you put on your skin and lips is absorbed right into the bloodstream.

It is worse than eating Carmex, because the liver doesn’t get a chance to detox the toxins.

Some of the ingredients in Carmex will damage and dry out the lips, creating a dependence on the product.

Here is what the Carmex and Blistex ingredients might do to you:

Paraffin and Petroleum
  • damages and ages the skin
  • linked to cancer
  • Contaminants from petrolatum are being found in most breast cancer tissues
Salicylic Acid, Menthol and Phenol
  • These ingredients may be derived from synthetic processes or they may be derived from a more natural source (like menthol from peppermint oil)
  • There are three grades of essential oils: Therapeutic, Cosmetic, and Food grade. In fact over 95% of essential oils produced are used just for flavor and fragrance and offer no therapeutic benefits.
  • Many cosmetic and drug companies will use one component like menthol or phenol or salicylic acid, but in the best natural preparations the entire therapeutic grade essential oil is used with all 80 to 300 naturally occurring components intact.
  • For healing the lips or any part of the body, a product must use a natural oil containing the hundreds of components responsible for its healing properties.
  • The healing properties would be absent from an oil produced for fragrance or flavor.

Check all beauty products for toxins like petroleum-based ingredients.

NaturalNews reports, “Petroleum in beauty products goes by many names (mineral oil, paraffin wax, and petrolatum, just to name a few).”

Plug “Carmex” into the Environmental Working Group Database and you will see that many of the ingredients are listed in the red zone of “high concern.”

What to do?

Look for a product without toxic ingredients. If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin or lips.
