  • Alzheimer’s, dementia, cognitive decline, memory loss?
  • MS and other neurological disorders?
  • Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder?
  • Autoimmune disease?
  • Cancer?
  • Infertility?
  • Heart disease?

  • Autism spectrum disorder?

Could these signs and symptoms really be B12 deficiency?

My post asked the question:

Could these signs and symptoms really be B12 deficiency?

Could your child be diagnosed with speech, language and social delays and these symptoms be tied back to a B12 deficiency?

Oh yes!….

I did not say a B12 deficiency causes all those conditions above, although there are some that are caused by B12 deficiency.

A B12 deficiency is associated with different health conditions.

If not causing, it is connected, or increases the risk of …

Cancer
There are studies that show how a person’s diminished capacity for methylation (MTHFR gene variant), can lead to damaged DNA (a risk factor for cancer).

If you are like 40% of people who don’t methylate properly, you want to take methyl or hydroxy cobalamin.

Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune B12 malabsorption condition.

B12 is important for homocysteine metabolism, and elevated homocysteine is a risk factor for heart disease.

I have several clients with high homocysteine, and when we tested their genetics, we found that they have the MTHFR genetic variant, and don’t methylate well, therefore they must take methylated B vitamins.

Intestinal malabsorption is a pretty common reason for low B12.

B12 is found in animal-origin foods so vegan/vegetarians can have low B12.

A B12 deficiency can result in infertility and recurrent miscarriage.

  • B12 deficiency changes ovulation and leads to defective implantation. (Journal Reproductive Medicine, 2001).
  • If you are dealing with infertility, insist on a B12 test and get tested for MTHFR (23andme.com will give you raw data that can be uploaded to genetic genie.org for this info).

You need B12 to help maintain the myelin sheath of your nerves.

  • Fatigue, weakness, numbness, tingling, memory problems can be observed.
  • If MS is suspected, be sure to get tested for B12.
  • A few studies have shown that there is a higher rate of B12 deficiency in those diagnosed with MS as those not diagnosed with MS.

Are you taking the wrong kind of B12?

CyanoCobalamin?

Cyano B12 contains a cyanide molecule.
Mass market vitamin manufacturers use cyanocobalamin. Why? Is it better? No, but it is cheaper for them.

Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of vitamin B12 that is not found in nature.

Cyanocobalamin probably won’t hurt you if you are one of those super healthy types and you also methylate properly (40% of people do not methylate properly no matter how healthy they are).

When you take cyanocobalamin your body has to get ride of the toxic cyanide molecule and convert the B12 to hydroxy B12.

Yep, cyanide, the poison!

Supplement manufacturers know there are better ways to give us B12 like
methylcobalamin or hydroxycobalamin,
but the cheap guys use cyanocobalamin.

Your body does not need cyanocobalamin.
Your body does not like you to take high doses of cyanocobalamin because it is going to have to work to detox out the cyanide molecule.
It has the potential to do harm and is not considered to be superior to methylcobalamin or hydroxycobalamin.

  • Although cyanocobalamin is a commonly used form of supplemental B12, it is it not immediately available for use by the body.
  • Cyanocobalamin must be converted through series of biochemical reactions to be utilized.
  • Methylcobalamin is an active and bioavailable form of vitamin B12.

But there’s cyanide in food???

Cyanocobalamin does not exist in natural foods.

There are companies that try to justify their use of cyanocobalamin by saying there are some foods with cyanide. Ok, but there are zero foods with the synthetic, man-made cyanocobalamin, so why would I buy something that is inferior and may not work for 40+% of people.
