MCT vs Coconut Oil

Q: Why use MCT instead of Coconut Oil, doesn’t MCT come from coconut oil?

A: Yes, but…

Both coconut oil and MCT oil have medium chain (size) fats, but they are different concentrations of certain ones.

There are 4 main Medium Chain Triglycerides and the difference (besides their name, is the number of Carbon atoms, 6, 8, 10, 12).

MCTs with 6, 8, and 10 carbons skip digestion, but are rapidly broken down and absorbed by the body.
MCTs go right to the liver,
giving you instant energy and ketones for fast energy and brain support.
Unlike other fatty acids, ketones support brain function because they can cross the blood brain barrier.

Most of the fat in your diet comes from long-chain fatty acids, which contain 13–21 carbons.
Short chain fatty acids have fewer than 6 carbon atoms.

Medium-chain fatty (MCT) have 6–12 carbon atoms.

These are the main medium-chain fatty acids:

  • C6: Caproic acid
  • C8: Caprylic acid
  • C10: Capric acid
  • C12: Lauric acid

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is better for cooking but it isn’t the best for energy and brain.

Coconut Oil is 50% lauric acid, c12 – great for fighting germs, good on the skin, important for immune system.
It has to be digested the regular way, taking longer to experience the benefits.

Coconut oil is best for making fat bombs!

MCT

  • MCT is odorless and stays liquid.
  • MCT is a quick source of energy, readily used by the body.
  • It is all or mostly Caprylic Acid. Kiss My Keto C8 has 15g C8 Caprylic Acid.
  • It comes in a plastic bottle and has a dispenser.
  • MCT is better at fighting candida.
  • MCT is better for fat burning, brain boosting, but you have to be very careful of quantity of MCT.

When you are just starting to add MCT oil, start with 1 tsp and go up slowly to 2 tsp – 1 Tbs per day.

MCT for:

  • Increased energy
  • Increased satiety
  • Fat metabolism
  • More efficient absorption, less likely to be stored as body fat
  • MCTs may increase the ability of the body to burn fat
  • MCTs may increase the fat burning of the body and enhance fat loss
  • MCTs with a low carb diet or ketogenic diet are effective weight loss strategies.
  • MCTs produce ketones, helping you stay in ketosis while supporting the brain.

WHERE and WHAT to BUY:

You want nothing else added (no flavor, water etc) and it needs to be 100% from coconut.

Ideally, you want 100% C8 Caprylic Acid and 0% Lauric Acid (its all about the type of medium chain that converts to ketones).

You want the label to say it is C8 Caprylic Acid – the kind of medium chain fats that convert into ketones that we want.

The one with the most Caprylic Acid and the least Lauric Acid is best for turning into ketones.

You don’t want C12, Lauric Acid, which is added by some because it is cheap.

We use MCT for the ketone benefits (energy, brain, fat burning), and Lauric Acid doesn’t convert to ketones.

Look at the nutrition facts label, it should state C8, C6, C12 if any.

I am using Kiss My Keto and love that it is in glass and has a pump.

Coconut oil or MCT?

I use both during the day.

I like to add MCT to my coffee and cook with coconut oil.

When adding to coffee, use an immersion blender to emulsify the fats – it is fabulous! Keeps you fuller longer too.
