Asthma Support
Q: Is this a good supplement to take for asthma?
(Ingredients are extensive: Mullein leaf, marshmallow root, quercetin, olive leaf, echinacea, oregano, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, zinc, selenium, bromelain, quercetin, black pepper, thyme, plantain, peppermint, nettle, ginger, NAC, turmeric, Holy Basil, reishi mushroom, and elecampane root extract.)
Answer
A: When I look at supplements, I want to know the manufacturer. With herbs like mullein, it is important to know that you are getting quality.
While this list of ingredients sounds good, there’s a ton of things in here and it is only $23 on Amazon. This is a red flag for me. They say “made in USA” which is meaningless as all the raw ingredients can have another “country of origin” – which they don’t list. This company is an unknown, is there a website and a phone number? If not, this is another red flag.
- For herbs I often buy tinctures, alcohol extracts of herbs, because they are quick acting and easy to absorb.
- There are also powders of herbs that can be added to water.
- Capsules are the least effective way to take herbs.
For Asthma, I’m familiar with using Mullein and Lobelia.
Stinging Nettle Leaf has an anti-inflammatory effect (I make nettle herbal infusion/tea using quality herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs, Frontier Coop or my local herb shop). Here’s my nettle post: https://getbetterwellness.com/nettles/
Lobelia is anti-spasmodic and opens up airways.
Mullein tells the nerves to relax and it is a good expectorant.
If it were me, I would get a tincture like AZMA tincture, made by an herbalist/ND who has used this with his asthma patients.
AZMA: Respiratory – AZMA Formula promotes normal, unrestricted air flow through the bronchi of the lungs. Ingredients: Brigham Tea, Mullein Leaf, Lobelia https://homegrownherbalist.net/product/resp-azma-tincture/
You could use AZMA 1/4 – 1 tsp, 2-3x/day and add Quercetin and NAC supplements.

Or you can try tinctures from Herb Pharm (Mullein Blend or Lung Expectorant), Dr. Christopher’s (Lung & Bronchial Formula)
SPMs – Help resolve chronic inflammation associated with asthma
SPMs are useful for a wide variety of chronic inflammatory conditions where inflammation is unresolved. This includes asthma.
We need inflammation but we do not need excessive inflammation.
- SPMs counter pro-inflammatory activity.
- SPMs limit tissue damage.
- SPMs actively promote resolution of inflammation.
SPMs actively promote inflammation resolution.
- Enhance macrophage phagocytosis (clears up cellular debris)
- Shorten time to resolution
- Increase production of anti-inflammatory mediators
- Increase the killing and clearance of microbes (virus, yeast, bacteria)
- Enhance tissue regeneration
Oh and diet!
If you are not already gluten-free, dairy-free, definitely remove those common problems. Some are asthma free by simply getting those inflammatory foods out.
